Divine Love

Director Gabriel Mascaro / / Brazil,Chile,Denmark,Norway,Uruguay

After dazzling MIFF 2016 audiences with the pulsating Neon Bull, Gabriel Mascaro turns his vivid gaze to religious raves and evangelical sex therapy in this playful, probing foray into science fiction.

In Brazil in 2027, the secret to a happy marriage is church-sanctioned orgies – or that’s what civil servant Joana hopes. She spends her days processing divorce claims, her nights attending cult-like Divine Love worship sessions and every minute praying to conceive a baby with her husband Danilo. But when her dreams come true, her faith is tested.

As shot with intoxicating colour by Mascaro’s regular cinematographer Diego García (Wildlife, MIFF 2018; Cemetery of Splendour, MIFF 2015), the acclaimed filmmaker serves up another vibrant feast for the eyes, this time exploring romance, faith, technology and humanity’s near future.

“Gorgeously shot and produced, impressively acted and with fascinating things on its mind, this is further proof that Gabriel Mascaro is one of Brazil’s most audacious and gifted filmmakers of his generation.” – The Hollywood Reporter
