Maat Means Land
Viewer advice: Contains stroboscopic imagery
Poised at the intersection of activism and art, wunderkind Fox Maxy’s TikTok-esque tapestry documents the injustice and legacy of colonisation.
The 2021 winner of IFFR’s Ammodo Tiger Short Award, Maat Means Land sees Maxy – an Ipai Kumeyaay and Payómkawichum two-spirit filmmaker – build on their ongoing preoccupations with Native American identity and decolonisation, here employing bricolage, recontextualisation and ironic framing to create a visual polemic on land rights, dislocation and trauma with an aesthetic that is very ‘now’. Borrowing from the affect of social media, the work is unrelenting yet mesmeric, a raw and fearless testament to the need to speak up.
