Grandmamauntsistercat

Director Zuza Banasińska / 2024 / Netherlands,Poland

Winner of the Berlinale’s Teddy Award for Best Short Film, this story of a matriarchal family repurposes archival footage from communist Poland.

Created entirely from the archival materials of the Educational Film Studio in Łódź, Zuza Banasińska’s darkly enchanting feminist work tells the story of a family through the eyes of a child navigating the binary of gender roles. Queering footage that was originally designed as didactic propaganda, the film reimagines the classic Slavic witch figure Baba Yaga as a prehistoric figure of the divine feminine. Grandmamauntsistercat is a stunning, layered reflection on kinship and identity.
