Lasting Impressions

Director Dylan Andrew Pearce / 2023 / USA

Plunge between the brushstrokes of impressionist artworks in this 3D spectacle that honours their daringly modern beauty.

Today, it’s easy to be blasé about impressionist paintings – some of the world’s most familiar works of art. But in the 1870s and 80s, artists including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh were controversial rebels who defied conventional techniques. Working in the open air rather than in studios, they daubed vivid colours from newly invented synthetic pigments, and their free brushstrokes captured the shifting play of natural light and the everyday magic of modern life. More than 150 years later, how can we recapture impressionism’s full emotional power?

Here’s how. Featuring an introduction by Sophie Renoir, great-granddaughter of the painter, this multi-sensory experience luxuriates in the pleasures of art and music. Don 3D glasses to enter the world of over 100 impressionist works by household names and forgotten geniuses – all brought to stereoscopic life using cutting-edge motion-sculpting animation. Enjoy luncheon with Renoir’s boating party; join Degas’s ballerinas at rehearsal; step up to the bar at Manet’s Folies-Bergère; soar into van Gogh’s starry night; and float away with Monet’s water lilies. All the while, find yourself swept up in alluring music, from Debussy and Ravel to Edith Piaf.

“This may be as close to truly immersive as you can get with a century-old painting … The art is dazzling, the effects breathtaking.” – Orlando Sentinel
