SHADOWS FROM LIGHT

Director Stephen Dwoskin / 1983 / UK

This is a cinematographic journey through the photographic atmospheres of Bill Brandt, Britain's master photographer, who was born in 1904 and died in 1983. Bill Brandt, who first worked with Man Ray, the Surrealists, and the Dadaists in the 1920s, documented life in England in the 1930s, and the War in the 1940s.

After that, he turned to atmospheric forms, featuring particularly landscapes and nudes. His stark black and white photography is mirrored by the camerawork in this film. His love of deep focus, inspired by "Citizen Kane", is highlighted also.
