RAISING VICTOR VARGAS

Director Peter Sollett / 2002 / USA/France

A breath of fresh air in American independent cinema, Raising Victor Vargas is a life-affirming portrait of teenage romance and the trials of growing up.

16-Year-old Victor lives in a small New York apartment with his grandmother and younger brother and sister. He is a cocky teenager, spending every spare minute chasing girls and talking trash with his friends. On a sweltering day, he visits the local swimming pool, where he falls for beautiful, self-possessed Judy. Victor's 'charms' have no effect on her but this does not deter him. Scamming a date with Judy, that involves a set-up between her brother and his sister, Victor realises that he will have to change his ways if he wants to get closer to his newfound love.
