THE PRINCIPLES OF LUST

Director Penny Woolcock / 2002 / UK

Paul surfers from writer's block and has become increasingly restless with his life. When he meets charismatic risk-taker Billy in a bizarre road accident, the two share a few drinks at a local pub. Paul's interest is piqued as he is exposed to a different, more secretive side of life. Around the same time he meets Juliette and the two quickly strike up a fiery sexual relationship. They move in together and Paul beings to write again, however after a few months their passions begin to wane. Meanwhile, Billy continues to lead Paul further into dangerous, but alluring situations, including bloody bare-knuckle fights, that tap into his primal instincts. A decision has to be made—build up a life with Juliette, or follow Billy on a quest for the endless high.

Employing a raw, immediate feel to the material, this incendiary British debut from Penny Woolcock, with songs by PJ Harvey and Tricky will leave audiences reeling. A Tiger contender at Rotterdam this year.
