DEMONLOVER

Director Olivier Assayas / 2002 / France

Cahiers du Cinema critic turned director Oliver Assayas (Irma Vep, MIFF 1997) takes us on another wild ride with this erotic cyber-thriller complete with a killer soundtrack by Sonic Youth and an eclectic cast that includes Connie Nielsen (One Hour Photo, MIFF 2002), Gina Gershon (Bound), Chloe Sevigny (Kids) and Charles Berling. In Official Competition at Cannes 2002.

In the not-too-distant-future two companies, Magnatronic and demonlover, are fighting for control of a new form of extreme manga and its pornographic 3-D version to be used on the web. Magnatronic enlists young hotshot Diane (Nielson) as a spy to infiltrate demonlover and thwart their attempts to muscle in on the lucrative sex industry market. Unaware of the myriad of secret violent and porno sites she is encroaching upon, Diane is drawn deeper into this seedy world, and becomes a pawn in a larger game, where playing's the thing, and there are no winners.

Spinning from Paris to Tokyo to Mexico to cyberspace, demonlover fast forwards the conspiracy thriller with its fetish-laden world, to dizzying new heights.
