SPRINGTIME IN A SMALL TOWN

Xiao Cheng Zhi Chun

Director Tian Zhuangshuang / 2002 / China

It is 1946 and China is picking itself up after the withdrawal of Japanese troops. Yuwen lives in a war-damaged house with her ailing husband, Dai, her sister-in-law, Xiu, and a house servant. She is bored and restless, looking for distractions when Zhang, an old flame and a friend of Dai's, pays the family a visit. Oblivious to the reawakened chemistry between his wife and old friend, Dai tries to set up his sister with Zhang. The household has come alive and by the end of spring, the relationships within will have irrevocably altered.

A remake of one of China's most beloved films, this sumptuous new film is an exercise in restraint, depicting the hidden emotions and desires with remarkable subtlety. Winner of the prestigious San Marco Prize at last year's Venice Film Festival.
