INTERSTELLA 5555

Director Kazuhisa Takenouchi / 2003 / Japan

Parisian electro-duo Daft Punk combine with legendary Japanese animator Leiji Matsumoto (Albator) in this hour-long visual and aural extravaganza. Its simple plot—four musicians from another galaxy are kidnapped by an evil manager to ultimately become the biggest band on earth—is essentially a ruse to bombard the audience with a kaleidoscope of colour and pounding beats.

Over two years in the making, Interstella 5555 is fuelled by a continuous soundtrack from Daft Punk, including such hits as One More Time, and the wonderfully traditional, kitsch visuals of Leiji Matsumoto where East meets West and dance meets anime. Direct from a one-off premiere at Cannes in Directors' Fortnight, Interstella 5555 is an outrageous mix of science-fiction, music and the decadent world of show-business, limousines and spaceships.
