SEE WHAT HAPPENS: THE STORY OF D.A. PENNEBAKER AND CHRIS HEGEDUS
Documentaries about documentary makers are always fascinating propositions, especially when the subjects of the film are as renowned as D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus. Gerold Hofrnann's film strikes a balanced viewpoint, in his entertaining examination of two of the most influential filmmakers of the past 30 years.
Few filmmakers have had as long and diverse a career as DA Pennebaker and rarer still is the kind of creative partnership that he and Chris Hegedus have managed to forge over almost 30 years of life and work together. They joined forces in 1976, after Hegedus, an up-and-coming cinematographer moved to New York, while Pennebaker was already a legend in documentary filmmaking as one of the pioneers of Direct Cinema and had made the ground breaking Don't Look Back wrth Bob Dylan. Their passion for music and politics resulted in such classics films as Town Bloody Hall and Startup.com as well as films on David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon andYoko Ono.
In addition to capturing the creative pair at work and home, See What Happens is bursting with footage of their classic films. A wonderfully revelatory film.
