Dir. Pamela Adlon / 2024 / 104 mins / USA / English / Comedy / International Premiere
Program Strand/s: North America

This raucous ‘mom-com’, written by its star Ilana Glazer (Broad City), delivers a bundle of joy from the slapstick indignities of impending motherhood.

New Yorkers and lifelong gal pals Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau, Survival of the Thickest) are on their annual Thanksgiving movie date when Dawn goes into labour with her second child. After supporting Dawn through the birth, Eden meets the spunky Claude on the train home. Sparks fly for one night only. A month later, Eden’s pregnant, on her own and hoping for support from her bestie … just as Dawn’s struggling with her own newborn and a toddler. Can these two women keep hold of their friendship through maternal tribulations ranging from hormonal horniness to spurting body fluids?

As one of the characters in Babes observes, life isn’t always like a Nora Ephron movie. But this feature directorial debut from acclaimed comedy actor and writer Pamela Adlon (Better Things) has been compared instead to a perinatal Bridesmaids, thanks to the sparky chemistry between Glazer and Buteau as well as a bawdy script co-written by Glazer and her Broad City co-producer Josh Rabinowitz. Beneath the film’s improvisational energy and humorously rendered anxiety about adulthood is an unexpectedly sweet love story between dear friends.

“Hysterically funny, defiantly gross, and truly sweet … There’s an admirable honesty in its effort to present characters who push back against the Hollywood creations of ‘the perfect mother’.” – RogerEbert.com
