Quo Vadis, Aida? M
Deservedly one of the five titles nominated for Best International Feature Film at this year’s Academy Awards, this extraordinary account of a 90s Bosnian tragedy is powerful, essential viewing.
The hugely impactful new film from Jasmila Žbanić follows Aida, a UN translator desperately scrambling to save her husband and sons from Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladić, whose efforts in 1990 to rid Srebrenica of Muslim men and boys made international headlines.
The acclaimed writer/director, whose Grbavica (MIFF 2006) won the coveted Golden Bear at the Berlinale, anchors the events to a female perspective, with Jasna Đuričić delivering a phenomenal central performance. Quo Vadis, Aida? is a moving, compassionate portrayal of a woman torn between duty and family – as well as a blistering indictment of bureaucratic bungling – that will leave few viewers unaffected.
“Unforgettable … Beautifully directed, it features an absolutely storming performance from Jasna Đjuričić … [and] is completely compelling in its life-or-death decisions and moral quandaries.” – The List
