The Worst Person in the World Unclassified 18+
Winner of Cannes’ Best Actress gong, the latest from Norwegian auteur Joachim Trier is an elegant, playful character study about a young woman’s existential crisis.
Julie is on the verge of turning 30, and her life is a familiar mess. Swapping career choices like her various lovers, she’s equal parts whimsy and self-loathing – until Aksel, an older, Robert Crumb–style comic-book artist, enters the picture and inspires her to settle down. But before long, Julie has gatecrashed a wild party and met the irresistible Eivind, a fellow drifter who pulls her life in another direction.
Joachim Trier (Louder Than Bombs, MIFF 2015) returns to MIFF with The Worst Person in the World, the third part of his ‘Oslo trilogy’ following Oslo, 31. August (MIFF 2012) and Reprise (MIFF 2007). Powered by a vivacious, unforgettable lead performance from Renate Reinsve – who won Best Actress at this year’s Cannes – alongside frequent Trier collaborator Anders Danielsen Lie, the Norwegian director’s latest stands as one of his best to date: bursting with wry comedy, rapturous set pieces and rich, complex insights into stability, inertia, and the milestones and crossroads that mark adulthood.
“An instant classic … This film is sweet and gentle and funny, in ways that are very real.” – The Guardian
