EVEN DWARFS STARTED SMALL

AUCH ZWERGE HABEN KLEIN ANGEFANGEN

Director Werner Herzog / 1970 / West Germany

The cast consists entirely of 27 dwarfs and midgets who act out an obscene parody of human life.

Starting out as a revolt against authority, it details a destructive rampage by the inmates of an asylum for dwarfs, depicting their assorted and extended cruelties. The film aims at showing not the alienation of the dwarfs, but their inherent similarity to the norm, and in the style of Bosch and Gruenewald, expresses a view of life that we ignore at our peril.

Not a film for the squeamish.
