BELOVED WHITE MOUSE

GELIEBTE WEISSE MAUS

Director Gottfried Kolditz / 1964 / East Germany

In East Germany traffic police are nicknamed "white mice" because of the colour of their uniforms. The "white mouse" of this film is Fritz Bachman who, while on point duty, is attracted to a pretty girl who rides past daily on her motor scooter. She is equally attracted but knows better how to make the first move. A deliberate traffic offence gives the shy young policeman the opportunity io speak to her, but difficulties are caused by another lady, who also breaks the traffic rules, but who is not dealt with as leniently.

It is delightful to find such a lighthearted musical comedy coming from East Germany. The photography in attractive colour is excellent, the songs quite witty and the acting appropriate to this type of comedy. The director, never short of excvitring cinematic ideas, handles the action with a gentle touch and a benign smile.
