THE ‘BURBS (1989)

‘BURBS, THE

Director Joe Dante / 1989 / USA

“A divine comedy full of corrosive humor… and a film that anticipates the Judd Apatow comedy brand, full of immature adults who fulfill (and enjoy) themselves through all forms of regressive behaviors.” - Cinema Fantastique

Pastel-coloured homes, immaculate lawns, the buzzing sounds of sprinklers in the air, the morning newspaper and a good cup of coffee - Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) is looking forward to a one-week vacation in his picture-perfect suburban haven. But he finds his white-picket sanctuary disturbed when a strange new family moves into the street.

A satire on American xenophobia and the Spielbergian myth of suburban idyll, with shades of Hitchcock, The ‘Burbs was shot on Universal's Colonial Street during a writers' strike, making it probably the most ‘improvised' of Dante's films.
