THE DELAY

La demora

Director Rodrigo Plà / 2012 / Uruguay/Mexico/France

“A moving social study of penury at work destroying the fabric of a family.” - Screen Daily

Maria, a worn-out single mother to three children, is tipped over the edge one day when it becomes clear she alone is responsible for the care of her elderly father. The action she subsequently takes is both shocking and unbearably real.

What could have been a bleak melodrama is, in Rodrigo Pla's (My Bride, MIFF 95) hands, an empathetic, subtly nuanced portrait of a father and daughter whose lifelong bond is cracking under enormous stress. Striking camerawork and a multi-layered soundscape lend an atmospheric reality to the urban slums of Montevideo in this powerful story that could, and does, happen anywhere.

Carlos Vallarino is heartbreaking as a proud man struggling to hold onto his dignity.” - Variety
