Rafael Corkidi, who makes his directorial debut with Angels and Cherubs, has previously earned a reputation for his photography on Jodorosky's two films, Fando and Lis and El Topo.
His imagery in this film, which he also photographed, is overtly surreal with a bold use of colour, and his subject matter is drawn from the realms of the mythical.
The son of a wealthy aristocrat falls in love with a beautiful girl, but is denied his wish to wed her by his father's disapproval. She disappears and, urged on by her mother, the boy seeks her out. He finds her dead, but she is brought back to life by his kiss. On their return, they discover that his father has mysteriously died, and that, as a consequence, they are free to marry. However, their marriage is not all that the optimistic youth had expected, when he learns the truth about the girl and her mother. The tale is framed within a parable about God's children learning that the paradise which they had been promised, was a falsehood.
