"Every shot is a tour de force of precision that leans toward pure hallucination." - Cinema Scope

At the age of 104, the indefatigable Manoel de Oliveira (The Strange Case of Angelica, MIFF 2010) is the world's oldest filmmaker: a veritable living legend who made his first film in the silent era. Now, with the artful, hypnotic Gebo and the Shadow, he draws another triumphant notch in one of the most storied careers in cinematic history.

Adapted from the Portuguese play, Gebo and the Shadow centres on the trials of a poor, elderly couple - Gebo, an accountant, and his wife Doroteia - dealing with the unexpected return of their wayward son. Featuring a cast of film legends, including Michael Lonsdale, Claudia Cardinale and Jeanne Moreau, and anchored by Oliveira's breathtaking visuals, Gebo is a captivating interrogation of honour and family by one of the true grand masters of the cinematic art.

"An exquisite yet anguished spectacle, a grand piece of cinematic chamber music for a cast of mighty soloists." - New Yorker
